First of all check the finger screen in the wall fitting. It might be plugged up. Then see if the unit is climbing all the way up the walls. If so it is doing okay. Put a piece of black tape (or make a mark) on one of the drive wheels. Hold the unit under water and count the revolutions per minute. (You need the mark so you can see the wheel go round. Twenty eight to thirty two revolutions per minute is optimal. If it falls in that range the unit is functioning well. If too slow then have the head repaired. If it is an older unit the feed hose may be the trouble. Vinyl gets stiff in cold water. Softens up as the water warms but never gets as pliable as before it got cold. I’ve seen hoses so stiff they’d snap when bent! Replace the hose. Also, check the hose floats. They absorb water and become “sinkers”, thereby putting more drag on the head unit. The head has to pull the hose. An old stiff hose with heavy floats takes away a lot of efficiency. Finally, remember that it is a pool cleaner– NOT a speedboat. It will not clean as efficiently if it goes too fast.

You may have a Navigator with the 4 feet and wings, people call them R2D2’s. While the pump is running carefully put your index finger, the long one, in the hole on the bottom of the cleaner try to feel the water wheel paddles moving, if not then try to move the wheel with your finger.

If it starts moving then all is well. Sometimes grit or glass gets inside and stops them from moving. Rodents work well too. Turn it over holding under water to see if you see a tail!
If the wheel is clear, check your filter it likely needs cleaning since these cleaners are suction side and affected by dirty filters.

I recommend the polaris hands down, I’ve had mine for over 10 years, and this year for the first time had it serviced, with new bearings and gears $75. If you have a centered return on the side of the pool, some pools have two and some three, if you have three then the Polaris 360, would be least expensive way to go. to answer your question. yes tires. are they worn down?…if not it, this probably isnt your prob. i know that the cold water hardens up the hose. until spring when the water warms up you will continue to have this prob. you can replace the hose and its swivels. but if you think it is the unit, some pool stores will diagnose your unit for free and even give you free labor on repairs. maybe try to rotate the two front tires to the back and visa-versa. this sometimes helps also.

Polaris 280 Pool Cleaner Question?

I have a polaris 280 automatic pool cleaner, but for some reason it just sits in one spot! It used to zip around the whole pool, but now its stationary. Please help!!

I just happen to be a pool technician, been one for 20 years. With the equipment running, pick the cleaner up and see if the wheels are turning. If not, do they turn freely by hand?

If they turn freely by hand, then you have a plugged jet that drives the wheels, and it is trying to move with only the jet at the back of it. I would recommend you take it in to have the jet cleaned out, unless your familiar with taking it apart. A word of caution though, this is the most common thing that pool stores miss on the Polaris.

If you don’t have good water pressure, try checking the screen where it comes out of the pool wall, at the regulator valve, and that your pump is working properly.

These concerns include that must be respected many (min. 6) hour intervals between addition of ph products and chlorine products to avoid harmful chlorine vapors. I’ve tried everything to get the cloudiness out of my pool water. I’ve bought several Clarifier’s, Shock Treatments, Algae Cleaners etc. Please someone help me what else can I use that will work?

The problem could be with your filter. See if it is clogged up or anything. You can also use a Filter Aid, that will help the filter pick up more things. As a last resort, you could use a floculant, which will grab small particles that the filter can’t get and drag them to the bottom of the pool which you can easily vaccum. And remember to keep using a weekly shock.

If the pump and filter are in proper working order, then I would investigate the chemistry. There are several things to look for when contending with a green, or cloudy pool. First is water temperature, the sun’s UV’s and warmer water temperature eat up chlorine faster than cool, dark conditions. So you want to make sure you have an adequate amount of stablizer (conditioner) in the pool. It helps the chlorine to last longer. You also want to pay attention to the total dissolved solids (TDS), and the calcium hardness. If those are high, the chlorine wont last very long either. In Arizona, where I live, the water from the tap, already has a high amount of that. If those levels are high, consider replacing the water in the pool.

You didn’t mention your budget. A Dolphin Automatic Pool Cleaner is by al means great, byt ff you’re looking to spend 300 dollars or under, then from a service guy’s point of view on effectiveness, cost, ease of repair, least things that go wrong with them, it’s a Kreepy Krauly, hands down.

Sure Baracudda markets itself as having no moving parts, but the one part that does all the action also wears out on a yearly basis. If you ask me, it’s also a moving part, so their literature is pretty misleading.
If you’re budget allows spending over a grand, then the Polaris vac sweep 360 or 380 is most certainly the way to go. The only issue here is if your pool currently has a plumbing line going to the pool it can use. Without one, you’ll have to go the over deck route, which then is a hose to trip over, lying on the deck. That’s the only drawback.

These two cleaners are totally different in their collection and operation. The Kreepy uses suction side plumbing (debris to the pump basket and filter), the Polaris uses pressure side, with it’s own booster pump and it’s collection is a bag attached to the Polaris head.
