Why Would I Have Maggots In My Beautiful Clean Pool? How Did They Get There? Its Never Happened Before.?

This morning i discovered hundreds of maggots in my perfectly clean pool, with no evidence of how or why. Our garbage isn’t near our pool, we are very tidy clean people & our pool yard is free of clutter or rubbish. Our pool shop guy had never heard of this before, has anyone else? We gave the pool shock treatment & removed all the maggots but we are in the dark as to where they came from. does anyone out there have any ideas or a similar story?

First of all check the finger screen in the wall fitting. It might be plugged up. Then see if the unit is climbing all the way up the walls. If so it is doing okay. Put a piece of black tape (or make a mark) on one of the drive wheels. Hold the unit under water and count the revolutions per minute. (You need the mark so you can see the wheel go round. Twenty eight to thirty two revolutions per minute is optimal. If it falls in that range the unit is functioning well. If too slow then have the head repaired. If it is an older unit the feed hose may be the trouble. Vinyl gets stiff in cold water. Softens up as the water warms but never gets as pliable as before it got cold. I’ve seen hoses so stiff they’d snap when bent! Replace the hose. Also, check the hose floats. They absorb water and become “sinkers”, thereby putting more drag on the head unit. The head has to pull the hose. An old stiff hose with heavy floats takes away a lot of efficiency. Finally, remember that it is a pool cleaner– NOT a speedboat. It will not clean as efficiently if it goes too fast.

The pressure seems to be great coming out of the vacuum. I just do not understand what can be done to get this thing going again. Any thoughts to fix this would be great…

You may have a Navigator with the 4 feet and wings, people call them R2D2’s. While the pump is running carefully put your index finger, the long one, in the hole on the bottom of the cleaner try to feel the water wheel paddles moving, if not then try to move the wheel with your finger.

If it starts moving then all is well. Sometimes grit or glass gets inside and stops them from moving. Rodents work well too. Turn it over holding under water to see if you see a tail!
If the wheel is clear, check your filter it likely needs cleaning since these cleaners are suction side and affected by dirty filters.
